CITY REDESIGN
Jason hosted and consulted on the four-part documentary series, ‘City Redesign’ on Channel NewsAsia. The series debuted in 2015 to mark Singapore’s 50th anniversary, and explored the republic’s economic and architectural transformation from fishing village, to trading entrepôt, to financial hub, to entertainment and leisure destination. Ultimately, the four-part series told the tale of “How Singapore created its buildings, and how the buildings created Singapore”.
Singapore is built on work. It has built for trade, finance, manufacturing, technology, science and the creative industries. Its buildings constantly adapt, and this is clear in the ever-changing face of the CBD, the city centre. Its buildings lead the way when Singapore needs a new way of working.
Singapore life has become vertical, and as the population grows, people are living in ever higher towers. So how do the architects ensure there is a sense of community built in? We look at the story of public and private housing in Singapore and see some of the latest, most exciting green development.
From the ultramodern super-malls and the latest developments on Orchard Road to the National Stadium, the ArtScience Museum and the forthcoming National Gallery, we see how Singapore's architecture of entertainment is developing and becoming ever more daring.
Singapore has a treasure trove of buildings from the past. Which buildings are worth to keep or conserve? We look at buildings perfectly preserved; some adapted almost beyond recognition; some lost forever, and others worth preserving for the future. But are we losing too much?
